Methylene blue (MB) is a reducing agent, soluble in water, and can easily pass through cell membranes. It has relatively few toxic side effects and is a clinically approved medication. Since its introduction into the biological field in the 19th century, methylene blue has been widely used: as a dye for neuroanatomy and bacteriology; in biochemistry research, it acts as an indicator for redox reactions. As an antidote, methylene blue is used to treat methemoglobinemia caused by nitrite poisoning; at the same time, it is also used to treat cyanide poisoning and isolepirubicine-induced encephalopathy.
Function of Methylene Blue
Methylene blue was first synthesized as a zinc chloride salt in 1876. Since then, it has been mainly used for the following purposes:
(1) Methemoglobinemia: Low concentrations of methylene blue are used to treat methemoglobinemia caused by nitrite, chlorate, quinones, quinimines, aniline, and nitrobenzene;
(2) Cyanide poisoning: High concentrations of methylene blue can be used for cyanide poisoning;
(3) Combined with local anesthetics for local pain relief;
(4) In recent years, it has also been clinically tested for the treatment of infectious and traumatic shock, cancer, herpes zoster, etc. Pharmacological studies have shown that methylene blue has detoxification, analgesic, antibacterial, antiviral, anti-tumor effects, and can correct the hemodynamic disorders of patients with infectious shock and treat abnormal penile erection.
Application of Methylene Blue
Methylene blue is widely used in chemical indicators, dyes, biological staining agents, and drugs. Especially in the dyeing industry, it is used to manufacture inks and other products, and its usage is considerable. Its application is also extensive in the following fields.
1. Industrial field: Methylene blue belongs to dye compounds. Industrial-grade methylene blue is often used for dyeing cotton, silk, paper, etc., and can also be applied in coloring bamboo and wood and manufacturing inks, pigments, etc. Additionally, it is often used as a bacterial staining agent, indicator, etc.
2. Medical field: Methylene blue has been used in the medical field for a long time. Due to its redox properties, it can be used to relieve cyanide, nitrite, aniline, acetanilide poisoning, or hemoglobinemia caused by sulfonamide drugs. In recent years, scholars have also conducted research on the application of methylene blue and its metabolites in various bacterial and viral infections, cancers, and central nervous system diseases such as depression, schizophrenia, Alzheimer's disease, etc.
3. Aquaculture field: Methylene blue can be used as a disinfectant in fish farming. The principle is that the ionic compounds formed by methylene blue in the aqueous solution can compete with the microbial enzyme system for hydrogen ions, causing the enzymes to lose their activity, thereby leading to the loss of the microbial survival ability; it also has certain efficacy in treating fish diseases such as glochidiosis, oblongisporosis, red-mouth disease, ichthyophthiriosis, and varanus shrimp larval dirt disease, and can also be used as an antifungal drug to reduce the mortality rate during fish transportation.
4. Skin care field: Studies have shown that methylene blue also has certain potential in skin care. Methylene blue can eliminate free radicals, stimulate the proliferation of young and old dermal fibroblasts, thereby having certain effects on improving skin vitality, promoting skin elasticity and collagen synthesis, and protecting the skin matrix through the degradation of matrix metalloproteinases.
